Job Description

An oncology nurse is a nursing professional who specializes in caring for people with cancer. Oncology nurses often serve as your first line of communication, and help coordinate the many aspects of your care throughout cancer treatment. They may perform a number of duties, including, but not limited to, the following:

• Delivers Patient Centered Care. • Reviews health history. • Assess and monitors physical and emotional status. • Keep track of laboratory, pathology and imaging studies. • Safely administer medications, fluids and cancer treatments (e.g., chemotherapy) • Collaborate with your doctors and other clinicians about your treatment plan • Help you understand the disease, your treatment plan and possible side effects • Help translate complex medical terminology and answer questions • Empowers • Help you plan for and manage symptoms throughout treatment • Demonstrates a strong understanding of the Oncology Nursing Society’s Standards of care as it pertains to the oncologic patient. • Applies Evidence Based Practices in the care of the oncologic patient.

Additional duties specific to the Clinical Coordinator role:

• Creates patient assignments. • Assists NM in compliance monitoring. • Collaborates w/ health access dept and other units regarding bed coordination. • Provides input regarding objective observations related to staff evaluations. • Actively works with preceptors and NM regarding orientation process and mentoring of new staff. • Actively participates in shared governance and nursing performance improvement initiatives.

Job Requirements

Valid New Jersey RN license; BLS and PALS where required. ANA certification in area of specialty preferred. IV therapy and venipuncture skills, excellent written and oral communication skills required. Sound decision making capacity. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with MD staff and other departments. Ability to perform all competencies listed required for employment in this position.. Minimum 3-5 years med/surg or similar experience. Five plus years preferred.
