The duties of a Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) nurse are to provide care for post-operative patients recovering from anesthesia, including general, regional, and local. The PACU RN treats inpatients and outpatients according to their needs, monitoring their vital signs to determine necessary care. Due to the possibility of rapid changes in a patient’s physiological condition, PACU RNs are required to administer diligent care via monitoring, assessment, intervention, and continuous reassessment. PACU nurses must be able to think critically and quickly. Missing a change in the patient’s condition could be life threatening. PACU RN’s are highly trained critical care nurses.
The PACU nurse takes care of adult and pediatric patients. Certifications needed: Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). PACU nurses are highly trained critical care nurses. After a surgical operation or a procedure performed with the patient under anesthesia, the patient is transferred to the PACU.
Current New Jersey Professional Nurse License; Ability to perform all competencies of the position is required for employment in the position. Two years Medical/Surgical Nursing or one year Critical Care Nursing required. One to two years PACU experience preferred.
