Job Description

A hospital patient registrar specialist collects patient information and performs several administrative functions, from verifying insurance to executing admissions, transfer, and discharge procedures. This professional must remain calm and efficient since his or her work is often performed in a fast-paced environment where time is of the essence. A certificate or diploma program, along with administrative experience in a medical environment, can prepare an individual for this career.

Job Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent. Medical Terminology Certification preferred. Previous experience in a hospital patient registration setting, doctor's office (handling patients scheduling, obtaining pre-certifications, authorizations and referrals) or patient services environment strongly preferred; and/or Previous experience in a census management (assigning beds) position preferred; and/or Previous experience in a patient services environment (billing/collections- must have a working knowledge of more than one provider such as Medicare, Medicaid, HMO's and others. Experience in completing medical assistance application (family care, PE's, PAIC's or charity care) helpful. Experience in a customer service relate environment preferred. Well developed interpersonal skills with the ability to understand and communicate with persons of varying acuities. Must be able to work with the public and maintain poise under difficult situations at all times. Knowledge of medical technology helpful. Good typing and computer skills a must. Any second language a plus.
